Blue Hydrangea Pastel Demonstration

I start out with a vine charcoal outline to establish the desired composition. The finished painting will be 16" x 20".

Next, I fill in blocks of local color, double-checking composition.

At this stage, I add more layers of color to further define the flower. I concentrate on color and enhancing the three-dimensional form.

What the entire painting looks like after I define the edges of the flowers and start to model lights and darks.

Eric snuck a photo of me working in my studio... :)

I now add the background flowers, choosing to leave out some elements to keep the negative space interesting and further adjust the existing petals.

The painting is really starting to come together
as I add details to the middle of the flowers
and blend the petals a little more.

All done. I deepened the colors
and added some line detail to the petals.

My mom-in-law with the framed finished product!
